Bagels
If you're home with your little or not so little ones, feel free to come to a bagels playgroup meeting. It's a good chance for fellowship among the adults, while the children have a great time playing. During the school year the group meets on the second Tuesday of every month at 1:00 in the parlor. During the summer, the group meets weekly on the playground. Gatherings are organized by Julie Holec.
Family Fellowship Group
The Family Fellowship Group plans monthly activities that allow families to get together and socialize. Events are planned to accomodate both the adults and the children. Past events have included camping, bowling, and a scavenger hunt. The group is head by Julie Holec, and parents take turns organizing the gatherings.
Red Tent
The Women's Red Tent Book Group (name taken from the book The Red Tent by Anita Diamant, the first book we read when the group became active in 2001) meets regularly every other month at an individual's home, with another person facilitating discussion of the selection. We alternate between Friday evenings and Sundays after church for a potluck brunch. The Health and Wellness Coordinator of Emmaus, Marsha Komandt, sends out an electronic reminder to those who are interested and intrigued by the group's meetings. She can be reached at 703-938-1264 or by email. Group members are different every month and we warmly welcome newcomers! There is always lively discussion and sharing, good food, fun socialization and fellowship.
Men's Group
The men's group meets approximately once a month for fellowship. We usually meet for dinner, although other activities like bowling and a superbowl party have been included in our repertoire. Announcements are made in the bulletin, and men of all ages are welcome. Contact Bill Bruck at (703) 204-8300 or email Bill if you're interested in participating.
Tough Old Birds
The tough old birds was organized about 1980 and was started for parents who had moved to be near their children. The minister at that time thought Silver Foxed would be a good name, but they decided on Tough Old Birds because they thought they had lived a little. They meet for lunch once a month in the church parlor and talk on different subjects-sometimes just talk. Everyone brings a sandwich and takes turn bringing salads and dessert. Seminarian Mary Barrino Smith has been a great person to be there with us. Wanda Butler writes, "I got into TOB's because of my mother and have never gotten a chance to escape." Gatherings are organized by Wannda Butler.
Spiritual Renewal-Prayer Space
Spiritual Renewal-Prayer Space is a contemplative gathering which meets, usually on the first Sunday evening of each month. The time is 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. unless there is a class scheduled in the parlor, which changes the time to 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. The hour consists of some informative or inspirational material, followed by a time of quiet meditation. Participants are encouraged to journal and share information. The time ends with prayers for people and places for which we are concerned. The contact persons are Boyd and JoAn Post: call at 703-281-9309 or send an e-mail.
Spiritual Knitting
Spiritual Knitting is open to beginning and advanced knitters, and everyone in-between. The group meets to work together on a project of your choosing; finished projects are blessed before they are gifted. Gatherings are organized by JoAn Post.
Oasis
Oasis meets weekly during the summer to discuss material for the upcoming sermon. Discussion, hosted by Rev. Bill, is always lively.
Tables of Seven or More
Tables of Seven or More are dinner groups that meet in church member's homes a for a potluck meal. The hosting of the meal is rotated among the members of the group. The group members determine the dates and times of the meals. The groups are made up of couples and single people. We also offer the option of a group for members with young children. It is a great way to get to know the members of our Emmaus family! Organized by Laurie Barber.
